Accessing The Web Using Satellite Internet

Satellite Internet is usually the only way that those who live in the rural areas can access the net where DSL or cable networks are not available. It is also preferred in situations where nothing but high-speed access can suffice especially if the dial-up connection is problematic.

This type of Internet access utilizes a satellite dish which transmits and receives data via an orbiting satellite. In essence, signals can be transmitted anywhere on the globe as long as the two ends of this channel are in communication.

For one to sit down and access the net on his computer, the dish must be two-way in that it should receive and transmit data. To make this possible, it must have a transmitting modem and a receiving modem which are then connected to the computer using a cable.

Some people shy away from this method of accessing the net due to the high costs that are associated with its use. The initial cost of installation is especially high if you have to purchase the dish, the modems and foot the labor expenses. The monthly charges that come with its use are also a bit expensive when you consider other avenues.

The use of this type of access also has a major limitation due to latency issues. Since the signals have to go to space and back for relay of information, a few seconds are required because the distance is massive. Videoconferencing and other live communication are greatly affected by this but where no live transmission is required the delay may remain largely unnoticed.

The reception of the signal is also affected by weather conditions such as rain or snow especially if it gathers on the dish. Obstruction of the signal path by buildings and trees also affects reception for there needs to be a clear path from the dish to the satellite for optimum reception.

The other side of the coin as in all things is that there are advantages that make this option sensible. The issue of cost may be nullified by the fact that most service providers are shouldering the cost of installation so as to attract more customers. What is more is that due to the increase in competition the monthly charges payable are also coming down.

This type of connection has what is known as Internet Protocol Multicasting Technology which allows a very large number of users to access the net on the same satellite simultaneously. This is not so in other forms of access which often become congested at certain hours due to traffic.

The connection can also be accessed on moving vehicles if the necessary gadgetry is installed and supported by a service provider. This is especially helpful for it becomes the chief source of connection at remote locations such as when one is out at sea.
