Satellite and Cable Broadband Internet: the Good and the Bad

In America, it is now common to find houses with internet access. It has become one of the best means of communications available in the country. In having an internet access at home, when you are not satisfied with slow connections in dial up access, you may want to try the broadband internet.

Once, dial up connection was capable of fulfilling almost all requirements of a good connection. Today, it is not even sufficient to do all the things that you are doing on the net. An example for this is watching a show or listening to music. Without a fast connection, you may not be able to do this without any interruptions. When people are attached to their computers, they would not want to occupy their phone lines, or getting another one.

If your home has a cable TV connection, you might want to bundle it with internet access, so you will have 2 connections at the same time using your cable line which is quite common in the housing areas. The setback is that the connection comes from a shared bandwidth, and it may run quite slow when lots of people are accessing it.

Another problem occurs when the cable TV goes off, the internet goes as well. People would be much irritated to wait for the connection to restore. This kind of connection also works only in your house. You cannot take it far, if you have a wireless device, without losing connection. It also is not available in rural areas.

The only option left for people living far away from civilization could only be the satellite connection. It is accessible in almost any place in this world. Also, TV channels are available through satellite, so you will have many options, but this service is very expensive. But thanks to various emerging satellite companies, you can find cheaper and affordable rates due to the competition in this area. The satellite connection is basically in the middle part in terms of speed. It is slower than cable, but definitely much faster than fixed dial up line. Since it is not fast enough, some online game players might not be satisfied, even though it only produces 500 milliseconds of delay.

The importance of real time playing can be measured by the game played. Satellites which use low and medium orbit might not be affected much by the delay, but the main trouble is that when the weather is bad or a sunspot occurs, you may lose service.

Rather you choose cable or satellite broadband will depend a lot on where you live and what is best for you. There is also cellular broadband now which works with cell phones and some laptops. Though it is fairly new technology, it is growing and will likely be a promising option soon.
