How To Text - Making Cellular Phone Smilys

Many of you probably noticed that in most of the text messages you receive there are some faces which consist of different symbols. These faces are called smiley faces and are created by combining different letters, numbers and signs. Smiley faces allow you to show the other person your mood faster and clearer. And to give you an idea about what we are talking here are some of the more famous smiley faces: :@ - Angry :X - Have nothing to say :), :D, :-) - Joyful ;(, ;-(, TT - Crying Those are just some of the thousands of emoticons which you can find on the internet. However if you want to make text messaging a bit more interesting you can try to think of smiley faces on your own.

The use of emoticons on cellular phones is recommended because you can save a lot of time from writing like sentences - for instance instead of typing "I love you" you can easily type "I3u" thus using an emoticon and an abbreviation. It may surprise you but emoticons have been used since the end of the 19th century in text writings, but those are just suggestions, because we can't determine if it was a typo or the writer wanted to write it like this. The first documented use of a smiley face was on the 19th September 1982 by Scott Fahlman and it proposed to the Carnegie Mellon University the use of: :-) - A symbol for jokes :-( - A symbol for things that are not jokes

If you have a newer model phone you won't need to think of smiley faces or search for some. You phone will probably have an application which will give you a list of smiley faces which you can use just by clicking on them. Of course more experienced users decide to write the emoticons instead of choosing them from a list.

However there is a difference between an emoticon and a smiley face. A smiley face is the expression made by simple symbols like:, ), (, -, ] and others while the emoticon is basically an image of that expression. For instance in some versions of Microsoft Word the ":-)" is automatically replaced with a real smiling face and you can choose which variant of both you want. Most of the forum boards and websites automatically replace smiley faces with emoticons when typing, so the time of smiley faces are slowly going extinct while emoticons are taking their place.

Of course not only internet based applications and websites change smiley faces to emoticons. Most of the newer cellular phones have the ability to transform smiles to emoticons and if you are using an older phone there is probably already an application that will allow the automatic transformation of smiley faces to emoticons. Meaningless if you choose to write smiley faces in the old fashion manual way or to use software to transform them to emoticons they will really help you to express your mood faster and clearer while training your imagination to create more and more innovative emoticons or smiley faces.
