Voice Over Internet Protocol telephony, most commonly known through the VoIP ADSL phone, is the newest in communication technology and allows users to simply use their existing internet connection to make and receive phone calls. This new technology is greatly changing the way that the world communicates. VoIP works by turning an analog signal-like those used on the average land line-and turning it into a digital signal.

This technology, which makes using the internet an even bigger communication tool-potentially for very low cost or even free-is truly revolutionary. By utilizing VoIP services, people can completely stop using their traditional land line, often resulting in big savings. This is changing the way the world thinks about communication.

Because of this loss of business, most of the major phone companies have come out with their own VoIP bundles. These plans are offered in many markets across the United States, and generally have a low cost. While not every person in the country uses VoIP, likely far from it, most have heard of it and may try it in the future.

There are actually three different VoIP services commonly used today. Those interested in trying out this technology can look into one or more of these different options to see which they like best. One is not necessarily better than the others, as each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

The first type is known as ATA and is the most simple and most common form of VoIP. ATA stands for analog telephone adapter, and essentially works by connecting a standard telephone to the computer or internet line to place and receive phone calls. These adapters are often sold in kits by providers that make it easy to open it, plug it and be in business.

The next type of VoIP is known as an IP phone. These devices look just like the average telephone but instead of the average phone jack, they have an Ethernet connection instead. These phones are connected directly into the internet line or router and usually always have the needed software built right into them.

The last type of VoIP is computer-to-computer communication. This is the easiest way to use VoIP and makes even long distance calls completely free. There are many companies offering free or very low cost software downloads, and all users need is a VoIP ADSL phone, or a computer, speakers, a microphone-most of which are included on a laptop or come bundled with most desktop systems, and an internet connection.
